A plastic cone is gently, but firmly, held over the dog's nose to administer the first anesthesia to relax the dog.
After the dog is asleep, a tracea tube is carefully passed down the throat so that a mixture of oxygen and anesthesia can be administered during the surgery.

A needle has been inserted into a vein in the leg so that injections of pain relief and antibiotics may be administered after surgery. This prevents the necessity of having to cause the animal to undergo any further anxiety and pain while future "shots" are given.
The needle has been secured to the leg with tape to prevent accidental movement or loss.
