Toby is a Yorkshire Terrier!
When the Yorkie initially came to America, there was a large disparity in size. They ranged from 12 to 14 pounds, but the standard eventually settled on an even smaller size. The AKC standard today is for less than 7 pounds with a long, lustrous coat. The "Teacup Yorkie" is unusually small - typically under 4-5 pounds as adults.
The Yorkie has a distinctive long - blue and tan, blue and gold, black and gold or black and tan coat. The puppies are born black and tan. When considering the life-expectancy of 12-15 years, it is more important to find a healthy puppy than to be concerned with its size. Most breeders consider any female that is under 5 pounds as unsuitable for breeding because of the difficulty during birthing the puppies.
These extra tiny dogs are often susceptible to a range of health problems, including vomiting, skin problems, allergies, falls, being stepped on and being attacked by other dogs.
It is very important to understand that this little dog needs to live indoors, have regular health checkups with routine teeth cleaning and dry dog food to keep the teeth clean and infection free. This little guy is oblivious to how small he is! They can be quite curious, bold and stubborn. They tend to exercise themselves inside the home, but love to go for a walk in the outdoors. The long coat definitely will need brushing every day or two.
We are pleased to welcome Toby to our practice!
