Bulldog

Keeley is an American Bulldog!

The Bulldog originated in England around the 1200's, where it was used in the sport of bull-baiting. The owners were proud of the ferocity of their animals and their ability to hang onto the bull's nose in spite of being beaten by the owners. They thought that the meat from bulls that had been bitten and tormented like this tasted better. When the sport was outlawed in 1835, they made an effort to fight the dogs against each other, but the dogs were failures at that sport. Because it now had no sporting purpose, the breed very nearly became extinct; being saved by fans who bred the animals for their positive qualities.

They were so successful that we now think of an amiable, comical, easy-going dog when we think of the bulldog. Usually good with other dogs and with children, most are moderately friendly toward strangers.

This 12-15" low-slung tank weighs between 40-50 pounds. His wide shoulders and sturdy limbs give him a shuffling, rolling gait. They can’t tolerate hot, humid weather or long jogs. Most can’t swim. They do like being outdoors, but need to be housed inside with their families. Their facial wrinkles need to be kept clean to prevent infections from forming.

We are pleased to welcome Keeley to our practice!
