Simba is a Manx Mix!
The Manx is an Irish Cat that originated on the Isle of Man before the 16th century. In a large population of cats, taillessness will sometimes appear and disappear; but in an isolated group - such as an island, the taillessness enters the gene pool and reproduces. The original Manx cats on the Isle of Man were larger and more rangy, but breeding has resulted in a smaller "rounder" cat.
The head reflects the British cats, with full cheeks and round eyes and the coat is thick and double. The tail can be missing, (rumpies), short, (stumpies), or natural length with kinks, (tailies).
Manx cats are typically round-bodied, round-eyed, and round-rumped with "bunny-hopping" gaits! They mature slowly and have shy, friendly personalities. The Manx with short or normal length tails make lovely pets, but are considered unfit for the show ring. Only the "rumpies" are shown in the breed ring; although all Manx cats carry the genetic marker for full-length tails.
The adult Manx will weigh about 8-12 pounds, have a mellow, even-temper and may be a blue, white, red or silver tabby. Many are a classic tabby and white or "torties". The hind legs are longer than the forelegs, which contributes to its characteristic gait! These are usually very nice little cats!
We are pleased to welcome Simba to our practice!
